Terms of use
Last updated: 11 October 2026
These terms are written in plain language. In short: it's free, use it however you like, keep backups, and don't use it to break the law.
1. The software is free and open source
EthicalApp is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (AGPL-3.0).
You may use it for any purpose – at home, at school or at work – for free, share it, and change it. If you share the software (changed or not),
you must pass on the same freedoms: include the licence and make the source code available. The full source code is included with every
installation (in the source folder) and published here. The licence is
the legal agreement for the software; these terms only add the practical points below.
EthicalApp includes open-source components by other people, each under its own licence – see Licences.
2. No warranty – keep backups
We work hard to make the apps reliable, but they are provided “as is”, without any warranty, as described in the licence. We can't be responsible for lost data, damaged files or other losses from using the software or the online tools. Please keep copies of important files, and use Save As when you're unsure – the apps warn you when a file contains something they can't keep.
3. Using it responsibly
- You're responsible for the files you open, edit, convert and share, and for having the right to use them.
- If your version includes the Converter's Download from Link feature, use it only for content you're allowed to download – such as your own uploads, or videos whose creator or licence allows downloading. Many websites' terms (including YouTube's) don't allow downloading, and copyright still applies.
- Don't use the software or website for anything illegal, or to harm other people.
4. The online tools
The online tools run in your browser. Your files are never uploaded or stored by us (see Privacy). How fast and how big a file they can handle depends on your device and browser. Like the apps, they come without warranty.
5. Support payments
Support payments are voluntary gifts to help us keep making free software. They aren't a purchase: you get the same software whether you pay or not, and paying doesn't give you extra features, a support contract or any other service. Payments aren't tax-deductible (we're not a registered charity). If you paid by mistake or the wrong amount, contact us within 30 days and we'll sort it out.
6. Names and trademarks
Microsoft, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. Adobe, Photoshop and Acrobat are trademarks of Adobe Inc. Claude is a trademark of Anthropic. EthicalApp is independent and isn't affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by any of them; we only mention their names to say which file types the apps work with.
The open-source licence covers the code, not the name. If you publish a changed version, please give it a different name and logo so people don't confuse it with the original.
7. Changes
We may update these terms – the date at the top shows the latest version. Changes never take away rights you already have under the open-source licence.
